As I walk along the promenade, an older homeless woman, thin, grey haired in clean clothes, plants herself directly in front of me, making me stop.
"Can you help me out?" she asks. "My family's hungry."
She is clean and well dressed.
I don't want to give her money because she is confronting me. I am in a hurry. She does not step aside to let me pass.
"Not even a dollar?" she asks.
I smile and walk on. Then I frown and I look a little deeper into myself. I do not want to give this woman money. I realize that I only give when I choose to. Just being asked is not enough.
